There are line marks worn into to the wood from fishing lines. This boat has particular cultural significnace having been built by the late John Finlay Macleod, father of John Murdo Macleod, who built Jubilee (see AAS_AR_05). This boat is now owed by a grandson of the late John Finlay Macleod. On New Years day, 1919, a ship transorting men home from the first world war sunk off the coastline of Stornoway. The loss of life on the 'Iolaire' had a profound affect of on the communities throughout Lewis. John Finlay Macleod was a survivor of the shipwreck and survived by swimming ashore, with a rope, which helped to save the lives of other men.
