Place
La Castañal, Bimenes, Asturias, Spain
Material Source
The woods used in the making of these pieces come from dry wood recovered from forests near the workshop, or from prunings or felling in fruit tree plantations.
Technique
The object was made on a continuous electric lathe. Once the piece of wood is selected, rough shaping is done with an electric planer or an adze to create a preform. The piece is then turned using the lathe and gouges to rough out and shape it to the desired profile. The lid and the body of the container are made from the same piece of wood. The lid is decorated using texturing tools.
Function
It is a decorative object, but it can also serve a practical function, such as a jewelry box or for storing small items
Creation Purpose
The craftsman creates these objects as a hobby. He keeps them if he is pleased with the result, gives them as gifts, or sells them.
Production Quality
The production scale is limited, as the craftsman makes these pieces in his free time.
Conecept
The object is crafted using the woodturning technique, a craft with a long history in northern Spain. The shapes are reminiscent of the bowls and containers made by Asturian turners for domestic use (consumption and preservation of food). However, this piece is an original creation by the artisan.
