Tool

Electric wood turning lathe, skew chisels, parting tools and spindle gouges.

Place

La Castañal, Bimenes, Asturias, Spain

Material Source

The woods used in the making of these pieces come from prunings, fellings, and cleanings of fruit tree plantations near the workshop.

Technique

The object was made on a continuous electric lathe. Once the piece of wood has been selected, it is roughed by hand and with the electric planer to obtain the square base. The piece is placed on the lathe and held with the fingers while the lathe is turning, and the narrow, elongated part is roughed out with the gouge. The idea is to try to make as fine a shaft as possible.

Function

The object is an artistic piece, for decorative purposes. It has no practical use, but pieces of this type can be used as a finial or decoration for furniture, clocks, etc.

Creation Purpose

The craftsman produces these objects to improve his technique, and as a piece of art. He keeps the production for his collection, gives it as a gift or sells it.

Production Quality

The production scale is limited, as the artisan crafts these types of pieces during their free time

Conecept

The object is made using the woodturning technique, which has historically been of some importance in northern Spain. However, it is not a traditional piece from the area, but is the result of the practice and knowledge of international woodturning.
