Cultural Connections: The Land of Lăpuș , shows "a strong personality". From a geographical, ethnic and historical point of view, it represents the northernmost area of Transylvania . However, it is rather a kind of "lateral area" of historical Maramureș , from where it borrowed a rich lexicon, numerous ethnographic aspects and an appreciable folklore repertoire. To all this is added a historical fact, namely documents attesting that a series of Lăpuș localities were founded by nobles from Maramureș in the 14th century .
Geographical Region: It is bounded: to the north, towards the Maramures depression, by the volcanic mountains of Ţibleș , Lăpuș and Gutâi ; to the south, towards the Someș valley, by the Boi plateau, over the Breza peak (Breaza Peak 974m) and the Vima hill (777m); to the east, towards Bistrița-Năsăud county , by the Năsăud mountains, over which one crosses through the Înşeuarea Largă Pass (521m), and to the west, towards Țara Chioarului, by the Preluca massif.
Environment: The area associated with Chioar Domain represents the lower part of Lăpuș river valley, starting from the river's gorge to its flow into Someș river. It forms a contiguous territorial system with Țara Lăpușului, overlapping the river's hydrographical basin.
The climate of the region is moderate temperate continental.
